The history of the mill goes back to the 17th century. Today's buildings with a usable area of over 400 square meters were built around 1840. The Schmerbachmühle has been a listed building since 1980.

Schmerbach was first mentioned in 1327 as in the Smerberg. Smer (ahd. Smero, mndd. Smer) means fat in the sense of rich. [2] The current place name indicates the location of the settlement on the Schmerbach of the same name. In the 18th century the place belonged to the parish of Leichlingen in the Bergisches Amt Miselohe. The topographical survey of the Rhineland from 1824 lists the place as Schmerbacher M. This map series and the Prussian first survey from 1844 both show a mill symbol there, the latter also showing other residential buildings.
