As a cirque lake, the Great Arbersee is a relic from the last ice age. A special feature is the swinging lawn. The oscillating lawns, known as floating islands, are mainly found on the western edge of Lake Arbersee. They cover around two hectares of water and were created in the 19th century when the Arbersee was dammed by more than half a meter for the timber drift. In the process, moor blankets detached from the current lake floor and have been floating on the water surface ever since.

At the beginning of the Ice Age was in place of the Great Arbersees the valley of the Seebachs with little inclined slopes. During the last glacial period, frost and glacier movements created the steep sea wall and the basin of the Karsees.

The imposing Arberseewand with its marsh wells, rock cascades and small waterfalls houses one of the most impressive jungle remains of the Bavarian Forest.

In the steeply sloping terrain occasionally even snow and ice avalanches go off. Lean tree populations of sable-growing maples and beech trees bear witness to this. On the western edge of the Arbersee, below the sea wall, about 2 ha of water surface are covered with vibrating turf.
