On this 0.3 mile paved trail you walk amidst the remains of a hundred room pueblo, occupied by the ancestral Puebloan people over 600 years ago. You can find some petroglyphs at the south end of the trail.

The ruins of Puerco and petroglyphs are the ruins of a large Indian pueblos, which peaked around 1300 AD and contained over 100 rooms. It is the largest known archaeological site in the Petrified Forest National Park.

The sandstone buildings were constructed around a rectangular common area. Most of these buildings were above ground, but several kivas, or underground rooms, existed as well. You can still see the foundations where these buildings stood, as well as petroglyphs carved into the nearby rock. Some of these petroglyphs serve as solar calendars and indicate the winter and summer solstices and spring and autumnal equinoxes.
