The relatively small boiler lock in Emden is probably unique in Europe, as it can be locked in four different directions. To the east and west (to the port of Emden) lies the Ems-Jade Canal, to the north is the Emden Stadtgraben and to the south is the Fehntjer Deep. The lock overcomes a water level difference of 2.30 to 2.50 meters. In the center of the facility is the lock basin with a diameter of 33 meters, where the ships can change their direction of travel. The facility was built between 1886 and 1887 and opened to traffic on June 5, 1888 together with the Ems-Jade Canal.

The boiler sluice can be found not far from the eastern ramparts of the city of Emden in the Wolthusen district. The structure, erected in the 19th century, connects the Ems-Jade Canal with the Fehntjer Tief and the water system of the Emden city moats. The journey can be continued in three directions from each lock chamber. This makes the boiler lock the only hydraulic system of its kind in Europe that is a listed building and is still in operation every day.
