An integral part of the Rote Mühle is to encourage children to be aware of their environment and to learn to appreciate it. This is done on the one hand by caring for the animals living on the kindergarten (goats and rabbits) and looking after the wild animals on the wall (hedgehogs and birds). On the other hand, the large garden and the greenhouse offer a variety of options for planting, caring for and harvesting flowers, herbs, vegetables and fruit.

The Red Mill was built on the “Valdern Wall” in 1573.

In 1574, the southern and northern mills, the wheat mill and the yellow mill followed on the same wall.

The Red Mill was also on the oldest city maps of Emden from 1572, 1576 and 1595.

Walther Voigt wrote:

“The first documented occurrence of this mill is in the Emder Contract Protocols under XVII, 281 on March 13, 1584:

Red Valder Moele.

In 1702 Jan Otten Dirck bought Dirck’s mill, called the Red Mill.”

In 1712, Heinrich Onnen received the red mill as a long-term lease and he paid wind money of 30 Reichstaler annually.

On June 13, 1794, the combined milling partnership acquired the red Stander-Rocken mill from the miller Wilke Nannen for 7,500 guilders in gold.

“De roede Molen” was rebuilt in 1795 and 1810 as a Dutch gallery.
