Elmarshausen Castle is beautifully situated in the Erpetal. From a distance, it is a real eye-catcher with its extensive group of buildings.

Up close, you can see that the main castle building from the Renaissance period is not in the best condition.

The outbuildings are managed and in order.

Elmarshausen itself dates back to 1123, when the town was known as Egelmareshusun. In the 13th century, the Lords of Helfenberg had a moated castle built on the Erpe. This also had strategic reasons, as an important trade route between Paderborn and Fritzlar passed nearby. In 1534 the estate went to Hermann von Malsburg. He had it expanded into a castle. The responsible builder is said to have been Jörg Unkair, who also designed the Neuhaus castles near Paderborn and in Petershagen. Elmarshausen Castle is also the southernmost representative of the Weser Renaissance. The castle grounds are still inhabited by descendants and are therefore still family property. Unfortunately, the castle is partially falling into disrepair, but the very well-kept outbuildings contain an important Trakehner horse breeding facility.

You are not allowed to enter the castle grounds, but you can register for a guided tour in advance.

The Eco-Path information board is located below the castle on the Erpe.
