The Vryburg is a medieval ring wall that is important for the early medieval settlement in the Ruhr Valley. Today's deserted area of the complex is located in the eastern part of Essen, Horst, on a hill north of the Ruhr in the immediate vicinity to the east of the Horst house. It may have been the forerunner of this mansion. However, the assumption has not yet been proven.

On the northern plateau facing the Ruhr lowland, immediately north of Haus Horst, lies the medieval ring wall complex Vryburg. Excavations by E. Kahrs in 1934 and E. Schumacher in 1973 provide evidence of a ring wall complex from the 9th/10th centuries. Century, which is seen as the predecessor of the neighboring Horst House.
The four-sided, approximately 110 meter x 100 meter complex is surrounded by a double ditch on the northeast side. The trench is 19 meters wide and 2.50 meters deep. Remains of the trenches that secured the southeast and southwest sides are well preserved in the terrain; these trenches are only filled in in the northwest area, but can be seen as a depression in the terrain.
A half-timbered house in the castle area stands on a slightly raised hill. No further remains of older buildings have been preserved above ground.
The Vryburg is a registered archaeological monument (Essen monument list, BoD serial number 22, LVR-ABR E 19; entry text see PDF file in the media gallery)
