            Martin Luther (born November 10, 1483 in Eisleben, County of Mansfeld; † February 18, 1546 there), an Augustinian monk and professor of theology, was one of the initiators of the Reformation. He found the essence of Christian faith in God's promise of grace and justification through Jesus Christ. On this basis, he wanted to eliminate the undesirable developments in the Roman Catholic Church at the time and restore it to its original evangelical form ("re-form"). Contrary to Luther's intention, there was a split in the church, from which Evangelical Lutheran churches and, in the course of the Reformation, other denominations of Protestantism emerged.
