In the old days - tanned hedges cover Eisenbolz

It is no coincidence that the rich oak stocks of Eisenbolz were referred to as "urban silverware" until well into the 18th century, since the use of coppice was considered to be an essential source of income for the small town on the Middle Rhine. Partly in the main occupation, but also in part as a part-time business of local farming and winemaking families, the wage and rotting economy was an integral part of professional life. Over thirty tanneries were served with the won tan, the regulations for the first time in the city's guild regulations of shoemakers and Loher ( Rotgerber) from the year 1587 are manifested. Twenty tanneries alone were located in the "Lower Castle" outside the city wall, whereby the name of the "Stinkgasse" located there now does not need a separate explanation. With the steadily increasing importation of wild hides, wage-earning as main livelihood also ended in Boppard in the 1890s. Source : Text information board
