The Globe House

The globe was considered the jewel in a magnificent terraced garden of Italian style. It was housed in a summer house built in 1650 and named Friedrichsburg after its builder, Duke Friedrich III.

With three stories, the elongated, cubically simple structure was a considerable height. Since sloping roof surfaces were omitted in favor of a roof terrace, the summer house took on a peculiarly alien appearance, unusual for the North.

The shell of the Friedrichsburg had just been completed in the spring of 1654 when it had to be extensively remodeled to accommodate the globe. As a globe house, the building only had a short "lifespan": After the Northern War, Tsar Peter the Great requested the Gottorf Globe as a gift in 1713, and the Globe House was opened to remove the enormous sphere.

The gaping "wound" in the house was never closed and rotted away.

The building was finally sold for demolition in 1768.

The replica – characterized by a modern architectural language

The new Globe House, built according to designs by Hilmer & Sattler + Albrecht (Munich/Berlin), stands on the exact spot where Duke Friedrich III had his Friedrichsburg castle built. However, unlike its historic predecessor, it is the first building designed exclusively for the display of the globe.

Through the enormous windows of the Globe Hall, it is now possible for the first time to view the new Gottorf Globe from the outside and admire the magnificent representation of the Earth from the garden.

The inclination of the Earth's axis is 54.31 degrees, corresponding to the geographical latitude of Schleswig. Similar to a map, which is always depicted and hung north-facing, a globe is constructed so that its axis is as parallel as possible to the actual Earth's axis. Only then can the globe be aligned so that the geographical location depicted on the globe is exactly at the top of the globe. Thus, the viewer sees the vault of heaven inside the sphere, just as they perceive the real sky over Schleswig.
