Even if the weather is not so nice it is definitely worth the direct ascent to the crater. You get a brochure with a map on the ferry. I would trade the tractor ride for a hike. But then it will be a day trip. There is no shop on the island. You have to carry water and food according to your needs.

Make sure you're well screened from the sun. There's not too much shade on Rangitoto, so wear a hat, proper clothing, and/or sunscreen. Make sure you bring enough water as well, no shops on the island.
