    The ramparts were built in 1270 for city defense. The former 3 km long city wall with many towers and Wiek houses and 22 gates at very different heights (30 m) was later redesigned into a park.
    Ponds, fountains, "The Drinking" statue, bronze sculptures and an obelisk can be discovered in the park today. An open door in the city wall invites you to visit the monastery "Zum Heiligen Kreuz".
    At 450 meters, the longest section of the city wall stretches from the Kröpeliner Tor to Schwaanschen Straße.

                The Rostock ramparts are located between Kröpeliner Tor and Schwaanschen Strasse and run almost parallel to Kröpeliner Strasse.
                The area used to belong to the city fortifications and the moat ran along the entire city wall on the mainland side as protection from invading enemies.
                The adjoining rose garden was built on the former further course of the moat that was filled in.
                You can clearly see how steep the terrain runs from the city wall down to the moat.

                    In the 19th century, large parts of the fortifications were demolished to build new districts and the ramparts were converted into a park.
                    Nevertheless, several sections still stand today, covering a total of 1300 m.
                    The city wall between the Rose Garden and the Kröpeliner Gate is particularly well preserved.
