The legend of the Stone Maidens

According to legend, an embittered castle maiden forbade two maids from having any contact with men. When one day she found the two of them flirting in love with a fisherman on a boat, she was so angry that she turned them both to stone as she fled. Since then, they have stood as rocks on the edge of the small fish pond.

A legend explains the origin of the "Stone Maidens" and the origin of the ruins of the Eselsburg as follows: "A damsel is said to have once lived on the Eselsburg above the valley, for whom none of the suitors were good enough. The damsel grew older and the suitors stopped coming. As a result, she hated all men. Her hatred went so far that she forbade her two maids from having any contact with men. However, when they went out on the ice pond with a young fisherman, the evil maiden is said to have turned them into the two 'Stone Maidens'. That same evening, lightning is said to have struck the Eselsburg. The maiden was burned to death in the fire it started."
