No precise date of foundation is known for the Beguinage of Turnhout, but it was probably founded in the 13th century.

The early classical gatehouse and the elongated tree-lined square characterize this beguinage. There is a well-preserved Baroque church, infirmary and houses from the 16th and 17th centuries.

The last Beguine, Grand Miss Anna De Boer, died in 2002.

There is a museum where you can learn more about Beguine culture. In 2022 it was announced that the gatehouse would be renovated.[1]

The beguinage was first mentioned in 1340, but is probably several decades older.
This square beguinage originated on the former grounds of the castle.
In the 18th century there were about 350 Beguines, but afterwards their number gradually decreased.
The last Beguine, the Dutch Joanna de Boer, died in 2002.
But the splendor of the beguinage still remains.
UNESCO world heritage.
