The Stör Barrier The Stör Barrier has been protecting around 33,000 hectares of land, including the city of Itzehoe, from the storm surges of the North Sea since 1975. The Stör is the largest tributary of the Elbe in Schleswig-Holstein. In the lower reaches from Kellinghusen to its mouth, it is a shipping route and is subject to the influence of the tide. During storm surges, the gates are closed. Normally, the water can flow in and out again unhindered with the tides. If the water level of the Elbe rises to 2.50 m above sea level during a storm surge (normal altitude - zero = height of sea level), the gates and segments of the barrage are closed until the flood subsides and the water level in the Elbe and Stör is equalized again . By May 2014, 906 storm surges had been averted.
