At 1,453 m, the Grosser Rachel is the second highest mountain in the Bavarian Forest. The view from the summit stretches from the Osser and Grosser Arber in the northwest to the Dreisesselberg in the southeast.

The Grosser Rachel is the local mountain of the communities of Frauenau and Spiegelau. Starting points for a climb are the towns of Oberfrauenau, Klingenbrunn train station, Gfäll car park or the Racheldiensthütte. The "Waldschmidthaus" mountain hut at an altitude of 1,360 m is a great place to rest and have a bite to eat on the mountain. In winter, the mountain can often only be climbed with touring skis or snowshoes due to the meter-deep snow.

Southeast of the summit, around 400 m below, is the Rachelsee. According to legend, it "houses" the banished soul of the evil Wecklin, a castle mistress from Rammelsberg near Schönberg. The glacial cirque lake is considered the quiet lake of the Bavarian Forest. It is surrounded by pristine jungle.

High above the lake, at 1,212 m, lies another popular tourist destination.
