Beautiful view of the Rhine Valley. At the foot of the western Ley you can see Erpel, in the south on the opposite side of the Rhine to Remagen far into the Eifel and in the southeast to Linz and on the opposite side of the Rhine to the golden mile.

"... The cliffs of the Erpeler Ley rise steeply up to 191m above the Rhine Valley. From up there you have a charming view of the Rhine, the towns of Kasbach, Erpel, Linz and Remagen and far beyond into the mountains of the Eifel .
The small town of Erpel at the foot of the Erpeler Ley is known for its 335m long railway bridge, which was the only intact bridge over the Rhine at the end of the Second World War and was taken by American troops. The cross on the 8.63-hectare plateau is intended to commemorate this.
The bridge was never rebuilt. However, their bridge towers on both banks of the Rhine have survived to this day.

The Erpeler Ley was formed around 20 million years ago when molten basalt lava piled up here to form a high mountain. The mountain was much higher then than it is today. Erosion and quarrying have shrunk it to its current height of 191m and given it its current shape.
Even the Romans used the rock as a quarry. It was only at the beginning of the 20th century that efforts were made to save the mountain from destruction. In particular, Karl Kollbach from Remagen made a name for himself here and founded the “Association for the Protection of the Erpeler Ley” in 1906. In 1909 it was initially possible to stop quarrying. After the First World War, however, basalt stones were mined again. Due to the endangerment of the railway line and the road passing below, the operation was soon stopped again. It was not until 1941 that the mountain was placed under nature protection and the Erpeler Ley nature reserve was created. ..."
