The construction of the Apollinaris Church was financed by Franz Egon Freiherr von Fürstenberg-Stammheim. He commissioned the building at the beginning of the 19th century and hired Ernst Friedrich Zwirner for the architectural design. Thanks to his support, this impressive building was built, which is now considered one of the most beautiful neo-Gothic churches on the Rhine.

Just as impressive inside as outside: magnificent frescoes, artistic stained glass windows and an atmosphere that immediately transports you to another time. You can really feel how much history is contained within the walls. And the view from up there is almost heavenly!

The Apollinaris Church – a real eye-catcher! High up on the hill, it sits as if watching over the Rhine Valley, with its majestic tower visible from far away.

In contrast to the old castles along the Rhine, the Apollinaris Church is considerably younger. The foundation stone was not laid until 1839. The master builder at the time, Ernst Friedrich Zwirner, drew up the plans and the church was built in an impressive neo-Gothic style.

A visit to the interior is particularly exciting. Here the walls of the nave have been entirely decorated with wall and ceiling frescoes.

The Apollinaris Church can be visited daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

In addition to the neo-Gothic architectural style and the decoration with frescoes in the Nazarene style, the Saint Apollinaris Church in Remagen is also known as a pilgrimage destination. This is where the main relic (i.e. the head) of Saint Apollinaris is kept, who, by the way, is also the city patron of Düsseldorf, the state capital of North Rhine-Westphalia. For a long time the pilgrimage was looked after by the local Franciscan brothers who, however, left Remagen in the early 2000s when their convents were merged.

around 1110 At the request and with the support of the citizens of Remagen, foundation of a provost's office, which is assigned to the Siegburg Benedictine monastery.

July 23, 1164 According to legend, the Archbishop of Cologne sailed the Rhine with the relics of the Three Kings on this day. The ship stops in Remagen and can only be steered again when the relic of St. Apollinaris, which is also on board, has been carried up to Martinsberg.

1295 The name of St. Apollinaris is mentioned for the first time in a document.

1526 The Apollinaris legend appears in print.

1836 Baron (from 1840 Count) Franz Egon von Fürstenberg-Stammheim acquires the provost and church, which was dissolved by the French state in 1802.

Typical of the century after the French Revolution. At that time, the Roman Church fought all innovations and retreated behind the mountains in an “ultramontane” manner.

St. Apollinaris was designed as an almost windowless cave with huge interior paintings, offset by a large painted sun at the highest point and a radiant judge of the world behind the altar. Consequence: you can only see the images very dimly.

Daylight only floods in from the right side. Consequence: Here you are blinded and cannot see anything exactly t1p.de/72kyk. This is all part of the program: it is obscurantism turned into stone.

Much clearer, although still not detailed, is the digital panorama of the German Foundation for Monument Protection t1p.de/pxav5. You should look at it BEFORE visiting the site and then compare.

Neo-Gothic church with many Nazarene-style frescoes from the 19th century. The altarpiece of the huge portrait of Jesus is reminiscent of that of Maria Laach. The blue starry sky in the vault is beautiful.
Very beautiful church inside and out.

A great church with frescoes. The way there is lined with an impressive Stations of the Cross. Unfortunately, some reliefs have been stolen and replaced with photos. If you climb the mountain behind the church over many steps, you come to Francis, who greets over the valley.

"... The pilgrimage church of St. Apollinaris in Remagen, built by the Cologne cathedral master builder Ernst Friedrich Zwirner, can certainly be described as one of the most important new churches in the Rhineland of the 19th century.
The previous church of St. Martin had to be demolished because it was in disrepair. The foundation stone was laid in 1839 and the shell was completed in 1843. The extensive equipment required time. The interior of the church is completely covered with wall paintings (mainly in fresco technique). The church was completed and consecrated in 1857.
St. Apollinaris can be described as a unique total work of art, entirely in the neo-Gothic style, in which every detail, be it the confessional, pulpit, main portal or high altar, is coordinated with one another. The wonderful panoramic location with a wide view of the Rhine and the well-tended gardens create a harmonious picture. ... "

                                            First Churches on Apollinarisberg

The exact date of the construction of the first church cannot be determined. It was probably built in the 9th century and was dedicated to Saint Martin, the patron saint of the Franks. Around 1110, the Benedictines of Michaelsberg Abbey in Siegburg established a provostship in Remagen on the initiative and with the strong support of the people of Remagen. The relics of Saint Apollinaris of Ravenna likely arrived on the mountain in the 13th century. The earliest documented mention of the saint in Remagen dates from 1295. The sarcophagus containing the main relic in the crypt of the present church dates from the 14th century.
