The figure of Mary itself dates back to 1593 and is attributed to the sculptor Hubert Gerhard. The statue was created for the grave of Duke Wilhelm V and initially adorned the high altar of the Frauenkirche.
The four heroic putti were only added in 1641 and replaced by copies at the end of the 20th century. The originals are in the Munich City Museum.
