                    The Maximiliansanlagen were created between 1856 and 1866 under the direction of the Bavarian court gardener Carl von Effner on behalf of King Maximilian II. They include the Maximilianeum, which was designed between 1857 and 1874 by the architect Friedrich Bürklein. Bürklein had already designed the Maximilianstraße leading into the old town in the neo-Gothic style. Until 1918, the Maximilianeum housed a historical gallery as well as a royal educational institution for young nobles. Since 1949 it has housed the Bavarian State Parliament. It is one of the most striking monuments in Munich's cityscape.
