Not far from Würzburg in southern Mainviereck lies Ochsenfurt. The Lower Franconian town pleases its visitors, among other things with a historical old town and a well-preserved medieval fortification. The first documentary mention took place already in the year 725. The name probably comes from the fact that you could cross the Main well with oxen at this point. It was only in 1525 that a bridge was built and with it began the economic upswing of the city.
In Ochsenfurt the third largest sugar factory in Germany is operated. In addition to the old town and the fortifications, there are several churches, secular buildings and museums to visit. A break on the Main Cycle Path can therefore be very entertaining in Ochsenfurt.

Ochsenfurt can be wonderfully built as a stopover on the way from Rothenburg to Würzburg. On the Taubertalradweg to Bieberehren and then 38 km on the Gaubahn bike path car-free and paved over to Ochsenfurt. From there comfortable without gradients along the Main, a very great day trip with many impressions, where you can have a good lunch at Ochsenfurt.

Ochsenfurt is already mentioned in the 8th century. It lies at the southern tip of the Maindreieck and at the place of a ford important for the earlier trade. The "Ochsenfurter Kauz" is kept in the town hall, a drinking vessel in the form of an owl with a capacity of 2l. Also worth seeing is the church of St. Andrew with a bronze baptismal font from the workshop of Peter Vischer (Nuremberg), the wooden figure of St. Nicholas by Tilman Riemenschneider and the tabernacle of an unknown Würzburg master. The city has a well-preserved city wall and along the main street an extensive row of houses with Franconian ornamental framework. Many cafes invite you to linger.

A visit to the very beautiful old town is definitely recommended. Also nice a hike from Ochsenfurt along the railway line to Winterhausen. There cross the Main and over Sommerhausen through the vineyards back to the starting point.

Ochsenfurt has a great old town with a few sights and good restaurants. The hand-brewed beer here is really tasty.
