In 1816, King William of Orange gave the city of Liège the land and building of the old Dominican monastery, and then a theater was built.
The foundation stone was laid in July 1818. The building was designed by architect Auguste Duckers. The theater has a classical architecture. The main facade is characterized by a marble colonnade and delimited by a balustrade that adorns an outstanding gable.
The Théâtre Royal de Liège was opened on November 4, 1820 and became the property of the city in 1852 (Wikipedia).

The building underwent a major renovation from March 2009 to September 2012, both exterior and interior. The historic parts have been restored identically (large foyer, main staircase and hall). Its Italian-style auditorium (capacity 1,041 seats) and its stage machinery make it one of the most modern theaters in the world.
