The village is located in the Heldburg region, in a floodplain along State Road 1135, nestled among meadows, fields, and forests. At its southern end lies the historic town of Friedrichshall, a former salt mine. Its northwestern neighbors are Einöd and its southeastern neighbors are Autenhausen in Bavaria.

The classic, traditional blacksmith's shop, once found in almost every village, has now almost completely disappeared. If a village didn't have its own smithy (in villages with a central green, these were usually located on the village green next to the village pond due to the fire hazard), the blacksmithing work was done by itinerant blacksmiths, a kind of precursor to the modern field forge. The most important piece of equipment was the hearth, in which glowing coal (a high-quality type of coal) was brought to a maximum temperature of approximately 1250 °C using bellows to heat the workpiece. Here stands the former blacksmith's shop and wagon smithy at the lower gate of the suburb, serving the horses and riders of travelers. The gate's columns on both sides of the street are still standing. In the 18th and 19th centuries, tolls for roads and bridges were collected here (toll house). A glimpse inside is rarely possible.
