The figure depicting Storm's Regentrude was created by Christoph Haupt in 2007 on the occasion of the 200th birthday of the writer, who spent eight years as a district judge in Heiligenstadt between 1856 and 1864.

The interior is particularly characterized by the three eleven-meter-high choir windows, whose color scheme creates a brilliant light in the nave. The people of Heiligenstadt became aware of the artist Graham Jones through his designs for the Cochem church windows. His use of figurative forms and vibrant colors was very well received. Since 2011, the windows, depicting the Annunciation, Pentecost - the Mission of the Holy Spirit, and the Assumption, have adorned the Provost's Church.

The well-maintained grounds reveal their flair and charm, especially during the pre-Christmas season. But there's also plenty to see in the immediate vicinity: an old mill wheel, parts of the city wall, and the Eichsfeld Museum. It's a particularly beautiful sight in the evening, when the church and surrounding buildings are illuminated.

The Geislede, the river that flows into the Leine at the edge of the park, plunges about seven meters down the sandstone in the spa park. Theodor Storm was inspired by this natural waterfall for the famous story "The Regentrude". The life-size wooden sculpture "Regentrude" by artist Christoph Haupt, to the left of the bridge over the Geislede, is one of a total of nine wooden sculptures that can be viewed on the Heiligenstadt Sculpture Trail. For many locals and guests, the Old Town Church of St. Mary, the Propsteikirche, is the real landmark of Heiligenstadt. It is the only one of the three Gothic city churches in which both towers were completed. It rises high above the roofs of the old town and is visible from afar. Its origins go back to the early history of the city. It is said to have been built as a result of the city's early prosperity as the second church, only shortly after St. Martin as the oldest of the city churches. In terms of history, today's church building has its oldest part, the western tower area, which is said to have been built around 1300. In addition to the height (53 and 55 meters each), the power of the towers is impressive. Without copper or slate protection, made of red sandstone right down to the tips, they are reminiscent of a fortified church. The architectural decorative forms in the church also appear impressive: ornamented capitals, consoles in the side aisles and vault keystones characterize its image. The youngest component of the church is the choir part. What is striking today is the widening and elevation of the choir area. If it was founded in connection with the construction of the nave, the altar could be consecrated as early as 1420. However, the choir room only received its actual completion with the construction work in 1715 and 1886. Today the church interior impresses with its brightness and clear lines. The three naves appear spacious. The mural depicting the Coronation of Mary is particularly memorable. In a thematic connection, the important Gothic statue of "Maria von Elende" stands in the immediate vicinity in front of the east wall of the south aisle.
