Impressive – here is the intersection of two canals. The ship just came out of the Risseau d'Isse, and it's certainly not a small freighter.

This church was built on the site of an older building around the 15th century. Listed as a Historic Monument, the Gothic church of Aÿ, built on the foundations of a structure dating back to the 15th century, has a rich and eventful history. About fifty years after its construction, a stone tower was erected, crowned by an elegant spire. Unfortunately, an early fire ravaged the newly completed vaults. The church houses a magnificent French Baroque-style organ dating from 1749, providing an ideal setting for the classical concerts held there every week in May. Aÿ is most famous as a centre of the production of Champagne. Aÿ's vineyards are located in the Vallée de la Marne subregion of Champagne, and are classified as Grand Cru (100%) in the Champagne vineyard classification. The vineyards, harvest huts, presses, and cellars in the region were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2015 as part of the Champagne hillsides, houses and cellars site, because of the region's testimony to the development of champagne.[3] Many prestigious Champagne houses own vineyards in the immediate vicinity, and several producers are located in Aÿ, including Ayala and Bollinger. We really liked the city and the surrounding area. We enjoyed our cycling trip.

The cycle path along the canal is very well laid out. It offers a bucolic setting on its banks. You will come across a few cycle tourists who have also come to enjoy the Via Francigena.

The cycle path along the canal is well developed and absolutely flat! Highlights are the tranquil Chalons-en-Champagne (formerly Chalons-sur-Marne) and the busier Épernay. At Condé-sur-Marne you can also follow the "Canal de la Marne à l'aisne" in the direction of Reims.

The Marne Lateral Canal and the Canal de la Marne à l'Aisne meet in Condé-sur-Marne. Here you can either cycle to Reims or to Épernay or Chateau Thierry.🚴‍♂️👍
