The hall church, built of rubble stone, dates from 1723. The tower is considerably older, having originally been the bower of the Hanstein manor house. The date 1674 is visible on the western portal. Noteworthy are the curved, two-story gallery and the wooden barrel vaulted ceiling.

The interior is particularly characterized by the three eleven-meter-high choir windows, whose color scheme creates a brilliant light in the nave. The people of Heiligenstadt became aware of the artist Graham Jones through his designs for the Cochem church windows. His use of figurative forms and vibrant colors was very well received. Since 2011, the windows, depicting the Annunciation, Pentecost - the Mission of the Holy Spirit, and the Assumption, have adorned the Provost's Church.

The foundation stone for the church of St. Gerhard was laid in 1925. The construction of the church according to plans by the architect Adam Weinhag in the style of Sicilian Baroque lasted until 1927. It was consecrated in 1929 by Bishop Caspar Klein. In 1964 it became the parish church of the newly founded parish of St. Gerhard Heiligenstadt. The last restoration took place in 2000. On January 1, 2017, the previous parish of St. Gerhard Heiligenstadt was dissolved; a new parish of the same name was founded, which also includes the former parish of St. Cosmas and Damian Geisleden including the former parish church and the branch churches of St. Martin Flinsberg and St. Nikolaus Heuthen. The church is a neo-baroque, three-aisled gallery basilica with a barrel vault. The choir has a three-sided end. The convent building of the Redemptorist monastery is directly adjacent to the church. The substructure of the unfinished tower is located between the nave and the monastery. The baroque high altar from 1774 comes from the Minorite Church in Fritzlar and was installed in this church in 1937. The statue of Christ above the entrance as well as the pulpit and the communion rail were made by Hildegard Jahn-Wiegel in 1952. Since 1960 there has been a Stations of the Cross in the church in the style of Gebhard Fugel, created by church painter Walter Kruse from Kreuzebra.
