Medieval city gate from the 14th century, built as part of the Grand Rempart around the lower town of Verdun. The gate was financed by Wautrec, a wealthy citizen and alderman, after the granting of Verdun's status as a free imperial city in 1374. The gate consists of two semi-circular towers with a portcullis and the remains of a drawbridge. It has been a listed historical monument since 1881.

These bridges are common in the north and northeast of France. There are a number of very beautiful examples in Thionville and Strasbourg, but there are also remains of such bridges in Saarlouis, Luxembourg and Condé sur l’Escaut. Another beautiful example is Verdun. Vauban had no fewer than three of these bridges built here, with which he could dam the various branches of the Meuse that flow through the city. The water was used to flood an area of approximately 160 hectares around the city to a depth of about 2 metres. Its operation was tested in 1687 in the presence of Louis XIV. The Pont Ecluse Saint Amand is still in good condition, even the drive mechanisms of the locks are still present. They are located in a building on the bridge. The outer wall is equipped with loopholes. This allowed an enemy approaching across the river to be fired upon. The road runs behind the building over the bridge, which was therefore shielded from enemy fire by the building. The bridge is open to the public on special occasions. The photos above show the views of the bridge, the second is from the city side. The photo below shows the road over the bridge, which is shielded by the building with the drive mechanism. Below, the slots that are cut into the arches of the bridge. They served as guides for the lock gates. The outer slot was used for the portcullises, the inner one for the locks. "Living Memory" - Jean No at Verdun When Jean-No, an artist from Toul, creates a work of art on the occasion of the centenary of the Battle of Verdun, it is a masterpiece and leaves no one indifferent. Not far from the war memorial and the tourist office, near the bridge leading to the Porte Chaussée, you can see the "Living Memory". It is a scrap metal construction made by the students of LP Freyssinet.

3월 29, 2025, Monument to the Fallen of Verdun
The War Memorial in Honour of the Citizens of Verdun, erected in 1928, is built in the La Chaussée demi-lune, part of the fortifications built in the 17th century by Marshal Vauban. The monument stands on the site of the former military slaughterhouse that was destroyed in 1916. The statues represent the five weapons of the French army that were involved in the battle of 1916. From left to right we can see: a cavalryman, a sapper-engineer, an infantryman, also known as a "poilu", an artilleryman and a reservist. These five soldiers form a human wall that symbolises the motto of the city: "They shall not pass". The names of the soldiers of Verdun who died in the First and Second World Wars are inscribed on the base of the monument. See also: A statue of General Sarrail opposite the monument and a bust of General Mangin on the wall of the city wall on the right. NOTE: Verdun's patriotic calendar is full and the commemorative ceremonies of 1 and 11 November take place in front of this monument. Be sure to visit in the evening, when the War Memorial Verdun is illuminated in the French national tricolour. Source: Tourism Verdun

3월 29, 2025, La Meuse à Verdun
The city of Verdun, situated on the Meuse, played a very important role in the defence line that was built in the period after the Franco-Prussian War (1870). Along the French eastern border, a strong fortification belt was built between Verdun and Toul and between Épinal and Belfort as protection against a German threat. The Meuse played a very strategic role in this. Now you can enjoy the peaceful river on beautiful footpaths and esplanades.

Official entrance to the city since its construction in the 14th century and a defensive element of the Great Wall of China that surrounded Verdun in the Middle Ages. It was offered to the city by the bourgeoisie Wautrec, a councillor. It symbolises the new status of Verdun, which became a “free imperial city” in 1374. This status obliged the city to maintain its own ramparts and to organise its defence in the event of an attack.
