Whitacker is the name of a blast furnace owner who settled here in the 16th century; the lake was thus named after one of his workshops. The lake is surrounded by forest. It has an area of approximately 150 hectares source tourism office.

The Vieilles-Forges estate welcomes 280,000 visitors every year. It is today rated as the first tourist attraction of the Ardennes.
