Medieval city gate from the 14th century, built as part of the Grand Rempart around the lower town of Verdun. The gate was financed by Wautrec, a wealthy citizen and alderman, after the granting of Verdun's status as a free imperial city in 1374. The gate consists of two semi-circular towers with a portcullis and the remains of a drawbridge. It has been a listed historical monument since 1881.

The Ossuary of Douaumont is an impressive memorial that holds the remains of more than 130,000 unknown French and German soldiers who died during the Battle of Verdun (1916). The bones are visible through small windows in the base – a confronting reminder of the horrors of war. In front of the ossuary is the Nécropole nationale de Douaumont, the largest French military cemetery of the First World War, with 16,142 graves, including a Muslim and Jewish plot. The complex was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023.

The Myth of the First World War “In memory of the French soldiers who sleep standing, rifle in hand, in this trench – their brothers in America.” This is the inscription in front of the Memorial of the Battle of Verdun in the ghost town of Douaumont. The monument was financed by a wealthy American banker, George T. Rand, who was moved by the famous legend surrounding the site. It is said that French soldiers buried standing, with weapons in hand, died from enemy shells. Bayonet Trench is one of the myths of the First World War. In 1922, it was classified as a historical monument and in 2014 it was considered a site of national importance. After the war, excavations uncovered 21 bodies of French soldiers. Fourteen were identified and buried in the Necropolis of Fleury, opposite Douaumont. The seven other bodies that remained unknown were reburied in the "Bayonet Trench". For many, the myth persists, while others question it. Especially since no body was found standing upright. In any case, the legend of the "Bayonet Trenches" shows above all how much the Great War left an almost indelible mark on the collective imagination. As the bloody conflict of the Battle of Verdun drew to a close, glorious stories quickly emerged in which the nation sacrificed itself for the fatherland. 3월 29, 2025, Monument to the Fallen of Verdun
The War Memorial in Honour of the Citizens of Verdun, erected in 1928, is built in the La Chaussée demi-lune, part of the fortifications built in the 17th century by Marshal Vauban. The monument stands on the site of the former military slaughterhouse that was destroyed in 1916. The statues represent the five weapons of the French army that were involved in the battle of 1916. From left to right we can see: a cavalryman, a sapper-engineer, an infantryman, also known as a "poilu", an artilleryman and a reservist. These five soldiers form a human wall that symbolises the motto of the city: "They shall not pass". The names of the soldiers of Verdun who died in the First and Second World Wars are inscribed on the base of the monument. See also: A statue of General Sarrail opposite the monument and a bust of General Mangin on the wall of the city wall on the right. NOTE: Verdun's patriotic calendar is full and the commemorative ceremonies of 1 and 11 November take place in front of this monument. Be sure to visit in the evening, when the War Memorial Verdun is illuminated in the French national tricolour. Source: Tourism Verdun

3월 29, 2025, La Meuse à Verdun
The city of Verdun, situated on the Meuse, played a very important role in the defence line that was built in the period after the Franco-Prussian War (1870). Along the French eastern border, a strong fortification belt was built between Verdun and Toul and between Épinal and Belfort as protection against a German threat. The Meuse played a very strategic role in this. Now you can enjoy the peaceful river on beautiful footpaths and esplanades.

Official entrance to the city since its construction in the 14th century and a defensive element of the Great Wall of China that surrounded Verdun in the Middle Ages. It was offered to the city by the bourgeoisie Wautrec, a councillor. It symbolises the new status of Verdun, which became a “free imperial city” in 1374. This status obliged the city to maintain its own ramparts and to organise its defence in the event of an attack.

This monument was built in 1929 in the city centre. The 73 steps lead to a crypt where the names of the soldiers were recorded in the Verdun Medal. Above the 30-metre high tower is a tower that leads east and back east. This monument is a permanent feature of the city. Beneath the warrior's feet is a crypt that is accessible to the public. From there, a soldier can search or go to the Mediterranean (from April to November). On 1 November, a ceremony was held at the Victory Monument to welcome the Holy Land under the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. This ceremony is a reflection of the sacrifices of the warlords and the desire of the incredible soldier. The anonymous soldier was killed on 10 November 1920 in the underground citadel of Verdun. 3월 29, 2025, Quai de Londres
For the inhabitants of Verdun, the Quai de Londres is a real nightlife venue. It is home to no fewer than twenty bars and restaurants. The biggest events in Verdun are held here: Musiques et Terrasses, the Grand Festival, the Venetian Carnival, etc. The current Quai de Londres was an additional victim of the bombing and was completely destroyed during the Battle of Verdun. After the war, the building was completely rebuilt and renovated with financial support from the City of London. Today, this pedestrian area is the scene of the most emblematic events in the region: the Musiques et Terrasses festival, the Grand Festival, etc. Source: Verdun Tourism
