🔭 **Observatoire de l’Étang d’Amel – Nature Observation at the Pond** At the Étang d’Amel, there is a wooden observation post from which wildlife can be observed undisturbed. Waterfowl such as herons, ducks, and geese are particularly easy to spot here – depending on the season, even with their young. 🌾 The platform is sheltered from the wind, offers information panels about the regional fauna, and is idyllically situated among reeds, trees, and riparian grass. **Tip:** Bring binoculars! The chances of spotting birds are particularly good in the early morning or late afternoon. Ideal for nature lovers and families.

🌿 **Étang d'Amel – A tranquil pond with a natural flair near Basse-Ham** The Étang d'Amel is a small, idyllic pond east of Thionville, surrounded by meadows, groves of trees, and quiet walking paths. The water serves as a refuge for birds and amphibians – and a relaxing spot for walkers and nature lovers. 🦆 Occasionally, you'll encounter anglers, ducks, or herons here – otherwise: pure peace and quiet. **Tip:** Perfect for a quiet break on your hike – take some time and enjoy the sound of the water and the birdsong.

This monument depicts a recumbent French soldier and is dedicated to André Thomé, a member of parliament who volunteered for the front and was killed at Verdun on 10 March 1916. Although exempted from service as a politician, he chose to fight. The sculpture, by Alexandre Descatoire, is entitled Le Soldat du Droit – the soldier of the right – and symbolises the sacrifice of just men for a higher ideal.

The Abri-Caverne de Douaumont was an underground shelter for French troops during the Battle of Verdun. Carved into the limestone bedrock, this shelter offered protection from artillery fire and served as a rest and assembly point close to the front line. Strategically located near Fort de Douaumont, it played a crucial role in supplying and sheltering soldiers during the fiercest fighting of 1916.

The Mémorial de Verdun, located near the ruined village of Fleury-devant-Douaumont, is a leading museum and commemoration site for the Battle of Verdun (1916). The museum displays more than 2,000 objects and uses authentic objects, photographs and audiovisual installations to show how French and German soldiers experienced this battle – in the exact same place where they fought.

The Lion of Souville Symbol of resistance at the gates of Verdun; This impressive monument, unveiled on 1 October 1922, stands on the site of the former Sainte-Fine chapel and commemorates the fallen of the 130th French Infantry Division. Designed by animal sculptor and veteran René Paris, the statue depicts a dying Bavarian lion – a powerful allegory for the defeat of the German troops and the heroic French defence during the Battle of Verdun. On 23 June 1916, the German attacks reached their peak at Fort de Souville, the last obstacle to the fall of Verdun. Thanks to the courage of a small French garrison led by Lieutenant Dupuy, the fort remained in French hands. The lion marks the extreme point of the German advance – the “last gate” to Verdun remained closed.

Small memorial column so that Henri Waechter would never be forgotten. Note the concrete block with iron rod in it next to the memorial. Such blocks were used to attach barbed wire. You will find many of these remains in the entire area.

Fortunately, you will find this sturdy staircase here. This way you can easily overcome a height difference of tens of meters. Know that in the Grote you had to bridge such height differences under mortar fire or other war violence.

This monument is dedicated to the French politician André Thomé, who was killed in action at Verdun on 10 March 1916. His seat in parliament meant that he was not obliged to serve in the army, but he enlisted anyway and made the ultimate sacrifice. Source: Trace of War

Fort Douaumont is a remnant of the First World War. One of the most powerful constructions and a symbol of the Battle of Verdun. More than a return to the past, a visit to this place immerses us in the heart of a legendary confrontation and tells us about the lives of those who lost their lives there. Fort Douaumont was built between 1884 and 1886 and was an extremely strategic location during the Battle of Verdun. It is also to this battle that the Fort owes its fame. The fort has been a listed historical monument since 1970 and, at an altitude of 400 metres, it offers a view of the valley south-west of Douaumont. As a building barely finished, it was almost immediately outdated because of its masonry construction. Indeed, at that time, new shells were able to destroy masonry structures. That is why Fort Douaumont was covered with a thick layer of concrete in the most sensitive and exposed places. The effectiveness and resistance of the weapons make this fort one of the most powerful buildings in the entrenched camp of Verdun. From the beginning of the First World War, the village of Douaumont and its surroundings were put in a state of defense: trenches were dug, barricades were built, barricades were hung. At first, the village managed to defend itself. But, from 1915, the village could no longer hold out. The stabilization of the front line then changed the type of battle. On February 21, 1916, the Germans attacked Verdun. Fort Douaumont was a privileged target: in two days, it was hit by 800 shells. In a few days, the front line came dangerously close to the fort. Four days after the start of the battle, it was already in the hands of the German army. For eight months, the French army fought to retake the fort, using many shells. It was not until October 1916, after 6 days of preparation and the deployment of exceptionally dense artillery, that yet another attack succeeded in recapturing the fort. In the Fort Douaumont Museum, many films, photos, archive material and testimonies tell the story of the fort and the heroic soldiers who fought there. A moving discovery that is a good addition to a visit to the fort. Source: https://www.landofmemory.eu/nl/sites-historiques/fort-douaumont/
