Founded around 708 by Count Wulfoalde, this Benedictine abbey became an important religious and cultural centre in Lorraine. The abbey was under the protection of Charlemagne and flourished under Abbot Smaragdus in the 9th century. Today, you can still visit the abbey church of Saint-Michel, home to the masterpiece La Pâmoison de la Vierge by Ligier Richier. The 18th-century monastery library houses thousands of ancient works and is one of the most beautiful in the region.

This former abbey church forms the historic heart of Saint-Mihiel. Originally built in the 9th century, it took on its current form during major renovations in the 17th and 18th centuries. Inside, you can admire a magnificent baroque organ (1679–1681), colourful stained glass windows and the masterpiece La Pâmoison de la Vierge by sculptor Ligier Richier. A place where art, history and spirituality come together.

2 rue Notre-Dame 55300 Saint-Mihiel One of the oldest civil buildings in the Meuse, built around 1350 and bought in 1428 by René I, Duke of Bar, later known as “Le bon Roi René”. This stately home with four wings around a courtyard served as a residence and courthouse. The facade is a beautiful example of late medieval architecture. Today it is privately owned, but the exterior can be freely admired.

The Monument aux Morts in Bonnoncourt was made in 1926-1927 by the Italian artist Duilio Donzelli and inaugurated on 30 April 1927. It consists of a marble obelisk from the Lérouville quarries, with an impressive relief of the allegorical figure of Victory, flanked by three soldiers. Symbols such as the Croix de Guerre, olive branches, a sword and the inscription "Pro Patria" reinforce the commemorative value of the monument.

Ninety percent destroyed during the Great War of 1914-1918, the town of Lacroix-sur-Meuse was awarded the Croix de Guerre 1914-1918 avec palme in 1921. The monument was created in 1927 by sculptor Duillio Donzelli, winner of the Grand Prix de Sculpture, in tribute to the many soldiers and civilians killed in Lacroix-sur-Meuse during the Great War. It was inaugurated by the Minister of War, André Maginot, in 1929.

At the heart of Les Éparges, you will find the Espace Maurice Genevoix, a memorial space dedicated to the writer-soldier who was seriously wounded here in 1915. His moving testimony Ceux de 14 gave a voice to the fallen of WWI. Right next to the building, a bronze bust of Genevoix, unveiled in 2015, underlines his enduring link with the place. Together, they form a powerful tribute to literature, memory and camaraderie.

This granite memorial is part of a series of 118 monuments erected in the 1920s by artist and veteran Paul Moreau-Vauthier. They mark the exact front line of 18 July 1918, the start of the Allied counter-attack during the Second Battle of the Marne. The Haudiomont memorial recalls the fierce fighting in this region and is a tangible milestone on the route of remembrance of WWI.

Saint-Mihiel is picturesquely situated on the Meuse, on the edge of the Lorraine Regional Nature Park. The town grew around a Benedictine abbey, founded in the 8th century, and flourished during the Renaissance. Visit the abbey with its impressive library, the Museum of Sacred Art, and the Saint-Michel church. Wander the charming streets, admire the sculptures of Ligier Richier, and taste local specialities such as the “croquets” and “rochers de Saint-Mihiel”. A town full of history, culture and character.

The Mémorial de Verdun, located near the ruined village of Fleury-devant-Douaumont, is a leading museum and commemoration site for the Battle of Verdun (1916). The museum displays more than 2,000 objects and uses authentic objects, photographs and audiovisual installations to show how French and German soldiers experienced this battle – in the exact same place where they fought.

The Lion of Souville Symbol of resistance at the gates of Verdun; This impressive monument, unveiled on 1 October 1922, stands on the site of the former Sainte-Fine chapel and commemorates the fallen of the 130th French Infantry Division. Designed by animal sculptor and veteran René Paris, the statue depicts a dying Bavarian lion – a powerful allegory for the defeat of the German troops and the heroic French defence during the Battle of Verdun. On 23 June 1916, the German attacks reached their peak at Fort de Souville, the last obstacle to the fall of Verdun. Thanks to the courage of a small French garrison led by Lieutenant Dupuy, the fort remained in French hands. The lion marks the extreme point of the German advance – the “last gate” to Verdun remained closed.

Monument in memory of André Maginot, a French politician who volunteered for the army in 1914. He was wounded near Verdun, but remained bravely at his post. After the war, as a minister, he committed himself to strengthening the French defense, which eventually led to the construction of the famous Maginot Line.

Built in 1881 above the Tunnel de Tavannes to reinforce the inner defensive belt of Verdun. The battery had three firing platforms and a traverse shelter, and was originally armed with two 220 mm mortars and one 22 cm smoothbore mortar. In 1900 it was disarmed and reused during the Battle of Verdun (1916) as an ammunition depot and shelter for troops. The traverse shelter is the best preserved element visible today.

Built between 1876 and 1879 as part of the defensive belt around Verdun. The fort played a crucial role during the Battle of Verdun (1916), especially in July when German troops almost took it. Strategically located on a hill, it offered a view of the Meuse valley and was connected to other forts by telephone lines. The fort contained an underground shelter (abri sous roc) and a Bussière tower with a 155 mm gun. Despite heavy shelling, it remained in French hands and became a symbol of steadfastness.

Located near the Porte Chaussée and the Verdun War Memorial, this contemporary metal sculpture was designed by the artist Jean-No and created by students from the Lycée Professionnel Eugène Freyssinet. Created to mark the centenary of the Battle of Verdun, it symbolises the living memory of the conflict. The installation connects the past and the future through education and art.

"Living Memory" - Jean No at Verdun When Jean-No, an artist from Toul, creates a work of art on the occasion of the centenary of the Battle of Verdun, it is a masterpiece and leaves no one indifferent. Not far from the war memorial and the tourist office, near the bridge leading to the Porte Chaussée, you can see the "Living Memory". It is a scrap metal construction made by the students of LP Freyssinet.

This spot is the perfect place to travel back in time. From the beginning of the Battle of Verdun, Fort de Vaux was one of the priority targets of the German offensive. In early March 1916, the Germans came within a few hundred metres of the fort and began a siege that lasted 100 days. Inside the fort, under a barrage of artillery fire, resistance was organised despite the lack of food and water. On 1 June 1916, the Germans reached the fort: the French garrison, isolated and without outside support, fought a week of heroic fighting inside the fort before being defeated by exhaustion. Triggered? Buy a combined ticket and immerse yourself in the history of this episode in the war of 14-18 with a visit to Fort de Vaux. The tour gives an insight into the daily living conditions of the besieged soldiers in the heart of the fort. A must-see for any history buff.
