7월 1, 2025, Cathédrale Saint-Mammès de Langres
Imposing cathedral of a small town steeped in history! Worth seeing from the outside and inside

As you approach Langres, a mighty fort rises proudly from a plateau! With a city wall over 4 km long, 12 imposing towers, and 7 city gates, it surrounds a beautiful old town with magnificent views of the valley and Lake Liez. A fromage is produced in the town's name: a soft cheese made from cow's milk with red culture from the region. A delicacy that must be tried! The Meuse rises in Pouilly-en-Bassigny (409 m) – that's about 32 km by bike 🚴🏿♀️ from Langres. From there, we begin our Meuse Cycle Route, approximately 1000 km to the estuary (Rotterdam).

8월 25, 2024, Place Diderot
In this square in the centre stands a statue of the philosopher Diderot. In the shadow of the statue of this great man, a "selfie bench" has been placed, where you can take a picture of yourself next to the "Nephew of Rameau". Michel Boussard made the statue of the nephew, a famous character in Diderot's book "The Nephew of Rameau" (which was published after his death in 1821).

Langres is the sub-prefecture of the Haute-Marne department, in the Grand Est region. It is located on the Langres Plateau, where several rivers originate, such as the Seine, the Marne, the Aube and the Meuse1. Langres has a long history as an episcopal city and as a fortified city. It was the capital of the Celtic tribe of the Lingones, who allied themselves with Rome. It became an episcopal see as early as the 2nd century and was fortified in the 4th century in response to barbarian raids2. Langres was a border town, first of the Kingdom of Burgundy, then of France. That is why the city was expanded into a fortress, with seven gates and twelve towers, which you can admire by taking the ring road. Langres is also the birthplace of Denis Diderot, the chief editor of the Encyclopédie, which would become a milestone of the French Enlightenment.

Langres**, located at an altitude of 500m on top of the rocky spur of the plateau where the Seine and the Marne originate, is a real acropolis, enclosed by the longest fortress wall in Europe. The beautiful place behind kilometers of city walls with towers and gates shows the traces of seventeen centuries of history and was spared during the last three wars. Limestone houses line the winding streets and passageways in the city center, where Diderot was born. From her high position she keeps watch over a land with many temptations.

The gate was built in the early 13th century to allow military convoys to bypass the city center. The gate had a double drawbridge and a barbican, a defense structure that was later demolished. The gate also has a mâchicoulis cornice (extension above the entrance), a medieval architectural element.
