Kyrill path Kastellaun Dear forest visitors, the city of Kastellaun and Landesforsten Rheinland-Pfalz invite you to explore a forest area that was destroyed by the storm. Walk safely on the windthrow area - as the foresters call it - on an 800 meter long path. Get a close-up picture of the damage caused by the storm and learn more about the naturally emerging forest and the work of foresters. The approximately 1.5 hectare windthrow area was created on January 18, 2007 by storm Kyrill. The trees were only 58 years old. Usually the fallen trees are delimbed, the logs are driven out of the forest and sold to sawmills. Here, however, the city and the Kastellaun forestry office have made the decision to leave the area to nature and have created an exciting object for you to see. A total of two million cubic meters of wood (mainly spruce) fell victim to this storm in Rhineland-Palatinate alone. Part of it has to be preserved in so-called wet storage areas over the long term. It can only be sold when the sawmills need it again. In Rhineland-Palatinate alone, eleven people lost their lives as a result of direct storm effects.
