6월 11, 2024, Heimburg (Burg Hohneck)
The Heimburg above Niederheimbach is also known as Hohneck Castle. It is considered an example of the historicist reconstruction of a castle ruin, which was triggered by the Rhine Romanticism. In 1295, the Archbishop of Mainz, Gerhard II of Eppstein (1230-1305), began construction of the Heimburg at the confluence of the Heimbach and the Rhine. It was a reaction to the fact that the Counts Palatine had illegally appropriated the castles of Sooneck and Reichenstein in 1290. The roughly square castle still shows a mighty shield wall to the Rhine between two round towers. The southern one was converted into a high keep. After being destroyed in the Thirty Years' War, the castle fell into ruin. The enthusiasm of nobles and wealthy citizens for the charm of the castle ruins on the Rhine led to many changes of ownership and the reconstruction of the Heimburg in the 19th century. In the years 1866-68, the ruins were restored on behalf of the manor owner Baron Otto von Wackerbarth (1823-1904), incorporating the medieval substance. The two-storey "Rhine wing" was built above the medieval cellar in neo-Gothic architecture with battlements and corner turrets. The castle later came into the possession of Countess Charlotte von Mellin. From 1882, the wine merchant Eduard Rabeneck had the Rhine wing extended and the neo-Gothic "manager's house" with battlements and a winter garden built in the garden. In 1898, the castle came into the possession of the industrialist Robert Müser (1849-1927), who also acquired the mill and set up a guest house there in 1910. In 1920, Nora Dunlop bought the castle for 1 million marks. The purchase was handled by her brother-in-law and cousin Hugo Stinnes, who was also the owner and general director of the company "Hugo Stinnes GmbH". He was probably the most important German industrialist of his time. During the period of inflation, many of the town's citizens found work at the castle doing building maintenance work. The Heimburg served as a representative residence for the Stinnes family and their prominent guests for many years. The complex remained in the family's possession until 1965.

Very beautiful castle setting, and beautiful views of the Rhine. Be careful of broken glass on the viewing platform, it will probably stay there when parties and celebrations are held there.

11월 20, 2023, View of Fürstenberg Castle Ruins
Its origin dates back to the early 13th century. At that time it was built as a customs castle and security fortress under the orders of Cologne Archbishop Engelbert I. In the later centuries, changing owners resided at Fürstenberg Castle. The 3 meter thick shield wall and the deep neck ditch ensured high resistance. In contrast to most castles, the castle even withstood the Thirty Years' War very well. However, it was destroyed by the French army in the late 17th century. Only the keep remained well preserved. Later plans to convert it into a neo-Gothic castle failed. The castle ruins were now particularly attractive because of their adjacent vineyards. For a time it belonged to the wine wholesaler Wasum and was passed around between different owners until 1993. https://www.rheingau.de/sichtswertes/burgen-rheintal/fuerstenberg
