We are accustomed, upon seeing such a memorial to the dead, like the one we encounter here in Sedan, to thinking first of the two world wars that shook Europe in the first half of the 20th century. However, the history of this striking memorial stretches back several decades further: it commemorates the victims of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71, which France waged against Germany. France's military defeat by the forces of the North German Confederation (led by Prussia), which included the South German states, led directly to the founding of the German Empire.

German military cemetery, where the remains of almost 30,000 German soldiers from two world wars rest. Impressive how well the graves of the attacker are cared for in the land of the defender.

At the end of the 16th century, Protestants and Catholics had to share churches; that is why Henri de la Tour d'Auvergne had a Protestant church built in 1593. After the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, it was transferred to the Catholics, who turned it into its own church again under the leadership of Robert de Cotte: De Cotte added the large round choir. This mighty fortress, the largest in Europe (35,000 m2, seven floors), was built on a rocky spur between the Bièvre and the Vra. The citadel is one of the oldest examples of French fortifications and could accommodate 4,000 soldiers. For five centuries, the fortress was strategically located between France and the Holy Roman Empire (and then Prussia and Germany) and was therefore constantly provided with new fortifications and thicker walls, while the existing structure was preserved. Wall 30 m high and up to 7.20 m thick with 4 bastions.
