The interior of the church is truly worth seeing. The "Mozart Organ" is particularly noteworthy. In 1745, Johann Michael Stumm built his largest organ for the castle church, with 36 stops on three manuals and a pedal. In 1748, he added a carillon. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart played the instrument while passing through in 1778.

A fantastic view of the Donnersberg, and fairly hidden from the road to Kirchheimbolanden. It's best to leave your bike at the bottom and walk up rather than ride.

12월 22, 2024, Bolanden Town Hall
Beautiful town hall right in the middle of the village. Opposite, a small green area with benches (NO more parking!) has been created, including a "Bolander cat" (= nickname of the Bolander citizens) made of concrete.

"The Paulskirche also has a special musical significance, because its [silent] organ is one of the most important of the 18th century in Germany. [...] The full sound of the organ can be experienced from Pentecost to Thanksgiving in the Sunday services, during (registered) guided tours and in the concerts of the "Kirchheimbolander Organ Summer"." Quite confusing: There are TWO Protestant churches here, just a few meters apart. (Further down in the town center is the Protestant Paulskirche with Mozart organ.) "The Peterskirche is a reflection of the history of the denomination since the Middle Ages. Catholic until the Reformation, it became Lutheran in the middle of the 16th century, reformed (Calvinist) with the construction of the Paulskirche, the new Lutheran church, and united as a result of the unification of the two Protestant denominations in 1817/18. In today's church space, this development in the history of the denomination is no longer immediately visible." Where there is now a small park, there used to be a synagogue (built in 1835/36), which was the religious center of the Jewish community of Kirchheimbolanden for more than 100 years. During Kristallnacht on November 9th/10th, “SA men partially cleared out the interior furnishings and finally set fire to the synagogue with gasoline, which caused it to burn down completely. Only the outer walls remained standing. The ruins were blown up in early 1941 [...].” The Jewish religious community of Kirchheimbolanden consisted of 65 people in 1933. “With the increasing disenfranchisement during the Nazi era and the effects of the economic boycott, more and more of them moved to other cities or emigrated. By 1938, the number had fallen to 30. During the November pogrom of 1938, the synagogue was burned down [see above], and Jewish homes and businesses were devastated. On September 1, 1939, 16 Jewish residents were counted. In October 1940, 10 of the last 11 Jewish residents were deported to Gurs." Source (partly quoted verbatim): https://www.alemannia-judaica.de/kirchheimbolanden_synagoge.htm The names of 11 Jews from Kirchheimbolanden are on a memorial stone at this square.

12월 14, 2024, Schlossgarten Kirchheimbolanden
The first mention of a castle garden dates back to 1602. The area that belonged to the castle complex of the Counts of Nassau at the time was called the ‘Peacock Garden’. [...] After numerous changes of ownership, the last decisive change to the garden took place in 1889. Dr. Heinrich von Brunck, technical director and board member of the Badische Anilin- und Sodafabrik (BASF) in Ludwigshafen am Rhein, took over the castle garden and ballroom. Agricultural use played a decisive role for him. He also gave the English landscape garden a special character - with selected plants from all over the world. In this way, he elevated the castle garden to one of the most important parks in southwest Germany. [...] In 1942, the castle garden was handed over to BASF Aktiengesellschaft as the Dr. Heinrich von Brunck Memorial Foundation. In 2006, the foundation sold the park to the city of Kirchheimbolanden. [...]“ Source (quoted verbatim): https://schlossgarten-kibo.de/geschichte.html The grave of Heinrich von Brunck (1847 - 1911) is still located in the castle garden (near the entrance at the train station).
