It's worth a visit during the open-air cinema evenings in the summer. A fantastic experience against this unique backdrop. Equipped with a picnic basket, you can really get comfortable long before the film starts.

Joseph Ernst von Bandel was born on May 17, 1800 in Ansbach. As a young man he received art lessons from Albert Christoph Reindel at the Nuremberg Art School. In 1816 he went to Munich and worked for the architect and master builder Karl von Fischer. With financial support he was able to spend 1825-1827 in Italy for his artistic training, where he met the sculptor Bertel Thorvalsen in Rome, among others. When he returned to Munich in 1827 he became an employee of the Glyptothek, and in 1932 he was elected to the board of the Munich Art Association. After a period in Berlin he was employed in Hanover, where he was commissioned to design the Residenzschloss, among other things. From 1837 to 1846 he lived in Detmold and was commissioned to plan and build the Hermann Monument (the second largest monument in the western world at the time) in the Teutoburg Forest, which he designed together with his son and which - partly due to financial difficulties - was not inaugurated until 1875. From 1946 he lived and worked in Hanover again. Weakened by age, he lived to see the inauguration of the Hermann Monument and then died on September 25, 1876 in Neudegg, Bavaria.
