The round church was built as a fortified church in the 13th century. During the renovation in 1959, the original choir with its small apse and the foundation of the central pillar were uncovered. Several sculptures from a late medieval altarpiece have been preserved, including St. Olof, which now stands above the baptismal font, St. Peter with the key on the pulpit, and St. Lawrence above the sacristy door.

The castle, probably built between 1361 and 1365, was used by the Danes to monitor maritime traffic in the Kalmar Strait. In 1436, the castle was burned down by the Swedes.
