The Casa D. Maria on Rua Fialho de Almeida is a palatial building from the 20th century with many staircases and towers, but looks older than it is.

The Mira River is the soul of this region, feeding it through an ingenious system of canals that distribute its water throughout the landscape. Despite being shaped by human hands, the reservoir of the Santa Clara dam dazzles with its natural beauty. From the top of the enormous dam wall, the view over this immense lake is breathtaking, and, on the banks, the river beach, one of the best in the Alentejo, invites you to take a refreshing dip.

In São Marcos da Serra, the main church stands high above, watching over the village. In the square in front, a 17th-century Algarve chimney stands out, the true star of the village. The village gives its name to the São Marcos-Quarteira Fault, an impressive geological formation that stretches for over 40 kilometres, connecting this point to Paderne and descending to the coast, in the Quarteira area.

Here, in the middle of this arid landscape, you come across a small dam, surrounded by pine and olive groves. Here, the landscape becomes dry, dotted with scattered ponds. The forage fields stretch between patches of pine forest, uncultivated land and vast olive groves, where rye grows under the silvery canopies.

Nice varied walk. Unfortunately we had to turn back because the river was too high to use the ford. So in winter check first if you can walk along it.
