Great wooded path on a great route

The 1975 train hijacking at Wijster was an action by seven South Moluccan youths to raise awareness for the independence of the South Moluccas. The hijackers hijacked a train between Assen and Zwolle, held passengers hostage, shot the driver and two passengers, and surrendered almost two weeks later, following negotiations and pressure. The event, which began on December 2, 1975, resulted in the deaths of three people and had a major impact on the Moluccan community in the Netherlands, directly (and partly) leading to a second, bloodier hijacking at De Punt in 1977.

De Wijk is a village in Drenthe with approximately 2,800 inhabitants. In the Middle Ages, farmers settled here along the Reest. In 1325, the monastery moved from Ruinen to Dickninge, which, together with manors such as the Havixhorst, contributed to the development of the village. In the 17th century, the monastery fell into disrepair and part of the area was destroyed during the disaster year. In 1811, De Wijk became an independent municipality. After the Second World War, it expanded considerably and since 1998 it has been part of the municipality of De Wolden.
