Beautiful route for both racing bikes and e-bikes.

The canal between which the Dieversluis lies was dug between 1767 and 1780 and is called the Drentsche Hoofdvaart. In the 19th century, the canal was used to transport peat that was extracted from the surrounding peat bogs. Building materials and food such as potatoes, flour and sugar beets were also transported by water until well into the 20th century. The canal has now been taken over by pleasure boaters, which certainly creates a pleasant atmosphere in the summer. The canal still has an important function for the drainage of the higher central part of Drenthe. The many locks spread over the length of the canal make it possible to manage the drainage, despite the differences in height.
