Peace and relaxation

Tough fort where you can walk through a kind of gallery. On the terrain of the fort is a small camping and some places have a great view over the ramparts.

Culemborg may not be a mega important port for shipping anymore but for pleasure boating it is all the more. It is nice to watch boats here!

The city of Culemborg was founded on the site where the old peat stream, the Meer, flowed into the Lek. The oldest reclamations on the riverbanks of the Lek date back to the early Middle Ages. When the areas behind it were also reclaimed, subsidence occurred due to shrinkage and oxidation of the peaty soil, which increased the risk of flooding. In 860 there were so many ‘terrible storms’ and the water level of the major rivers had risen so much that the old Rhine course along Utrecht could no longer handle the water and the river water sought another path. On its way to the sea, the water found another bed: the peat river mentioned earlier. This made this river (the Lek) an important main artery in the drainage of the Rhine.

The Tourist Information Point (TIP) is located in the town hall of Culemborg at Oude Vismarkt 4. The volunteers of the TIP, as true ambassadors of the city, welcome you and are happy to provide information about all the tourist possibilities in and around Culemborg. There is an extensive range of useful tips, brochures about the River Area, there are walking and cycling routes and there is much more to learn in this historic location from 1539! Opening hours: – Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 17:00 – In the weekends the counter is open from 12:00 to 16:00 (from 1 April to 29 October) When you visit the TIP counter, you can still see something of the vaulted cellar and the central hall on the ground floor. In that cellar, which was initially used as a meat house and later for wine storage, among other things, there is still a 17th century bascule. Free tour The town hall itself can be visited extensively during a free tour that is provided by the town hall guides every first Saturday of the month. Starts at 2:00 PM.
