Break moment at the border of the Netherlands and Germany

This cozy café on the Kwartiersedijk in Babberich is a hidden gem in the green countryside. With its authentic look and cozy atmosphere it is a nice place for a break during your bike ride. Enjoy a cup of coffee, a local beer or a tasty snack platter in a relaxed environment.

Nice cozy spot for a drink break

On the Emmerichseweg we pass Haus Halsaf, once a castle that was demolished in the 18th century and replaced by a country house villa. The house is mentioned in documents from 1363 and 1380 and may date from the 14th century. It is not known who the founder of this castle was. In 1380, Mechteld van Gelre, Duchess Dowager of Cleves, transferred the castle to Ernst Momm. After the Momm family, who owned the castle for more than two centuries, it passed into the hands of various owners and families. During the Eighty Years' War, Prince Maurits used the castle as a blockhouse in his state-Spanish lines against the Spanish. This castle, which was still a real castle with a drawbridge in the Middle Ages, was demolished in the 18th century and replaced by a country house. A white dovecote from 1785 can still be seen on the estate.
