The name Mariënwaerdt means island (waard) of Mary. In 1129, the Norbertines built an abbey on this bank of the Linge (on the site where Huis Mariënwaerdt now stands). Due to its location on the border of four provinces (Utrecht, Holland, Gelre and Brabant), the monastery was destroyed and rebuilt several times. In 1734, the estate came into the possession of the ancestor of the current family. “Heerlijkheid” refers to the lordly rights that the owner received when purchasing the estate. Hunting, lease and fishing rights plus management of roads and waterways. The surrounding land was and is used as agricultural land. Since 2005, the arable farming and livestock farming on the estate have been completely organic. At the fruit farm ‘De Hoenderik’ (named after the traditional basket in which cherries were picked in the past) cherries, apples, pears, strawberries, raspberries and plums are counted. There is also a Bed & Breakfast. Unfortunately, the farm shop, the tea room and the beautiful terrace in the orchard have been closed since the beginning of 2025 except during the cherry season, from mid-June to the end of July (every day from 11:00 to 16:00).
