The 77-year-old doesn't know what will happen next with the building, which houses a large collection of Stone Age finds as well as more recent exhibits. Today, however, he is happy that plans for a foundation came to nothing. There is too much heart and soul in it, he loves being the man of the house too much. Despite his hip problems, Johann Thölken is still able to walk well. He has to be too. Because the property on Bremer Landstrasse where he lives with his wife is large. Sheep eat in a meadow behind his house, peacocks frolic at the pond and in the garden, and the Thölken family hid in the earth cellar from 1888 during the Second World War when there was an air raid alarm. And then there is the pretty half-timbered house ensemble next door. The Spieker and his “little” brother. Johann Thölken and his father Hinrich brought Spieker from the Verden district in the early 1970s. There the two discovered the ancient, dilapidated building and bought it. They dismantled the half-timbered house beam by beam and rebuilt it in Tarmstedt on an area measuring 5.70 meters by 7.10 meters. It is assembled with wooden nails and has 43 leaded windows. A total of 212 compartments had to be filled with red stones. Friends and neighbors helped restore the building. That was 1972. Stories about each exhibit Since then, the over 200-year-old piece of jewelry has been home to Thölken's collections. Wooden chests, old spades and carts, peat knives and heather scythes, kettles, foot warmers and the oldest kitchen cupboard in the old Zeven district lie there in the subtle light. In addition to the rural cultural assets, the historical warehouse houses one of the largest early historical collections in the northern German region: flint axes, Stone Age bowls and cups, grave finds and a 40,000-year-old mammoth tooth lie in the glass display cases. Thölken has also collected 100-year-old porcelain pipes and fossils from all geological eras. He collected all of this over many decades of painstaking, detailed work. The 77-year-old can tell stories about each of the approximately 2,000 objects. Together with its “little” brother, which was also renovated, the Spieker became a landmark for the Tarmstedt community. The Thölkens acquired the smaller building in 1976 and restored it with the same care and love. Today it is impossible to imagine Tarmstedt's townscape without the harmonious building complex. The Spieker is his “small but beautiful world,” says Thölken. The building is in a state of slumber and he doesn't want to change anything about it at the moment. He enjoys taking care of the property. Today he is happy that the idea of a foundation never came to fruition. In 2000 he offered the Spieker to the municipality of Tarmstedt. He wanted to give his “life’s work,” as he called it, to his home community. The then 64-year-old planned to set up a charitable foundation for which the municipality would be responsible. But he wanted to sell the property to her. Faced with empty coffers, the local council rejected the proposal two years later. “I'm glad that I'm the owner, I don't have to ask anyone if I want to come in here,” emphasizes Thölken. There's too much heart and soul in it. He no longer wants to open the Spieker to school classes and other visitors like it used to, citing his age. There have been occasional purchase inquiries. “I would never sell in my life, I would rather sell my last drop of blood.”

The Tarmstedter Spieker Anno 1754 with Backhaus is owned by the Thölken family and served as a local history museum for many years. On the upper floor is a prehistoric stone collection.
