we tried to return to Maastricht using the Arriva bus. However, it was a small bus and only 3 seats were available. My friends walked.

A mysterious flint cave on the edge of the Albert Canal, near the locks at Klein Ternaaien. You reach the entrance via a steep path through the woods. The caves are dark, cool, and full of atmosphere—perfect for those who love hidden natural spaces. Bring a flashlight and good walking shoes!

The Strooberggroeve is a Limburg marl quarry in the Dutch municipality of Eijsden-Margraten. The underground quarry is located north of Bemelen under the Bemelerberg on the north side of the mouth of the dry valley Koelbosgrub in the Meuse valley. The quarry is located on the western edge of the Plateau of Margraten in the transition to the Meuse valley. At this point, the plateau drops steeply for a few meters. https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strooberggroeve

Neercanne Castle was built on the original site of Roman fortifications, the caves of which still exist and are used as wine cellars. The original staircase with a banister on wide columns is still in the hall. The ceiling features relief depictions of weapon trophies. The castle is currently in use as a hotel and restaurant.

The Trichterberg quarry is located in the forest to the left of the steep Eckelraderweg, between Gronsveld and Eckelrade. Diagonally opposite are dole chambers. The quarry has been designated as a “Geological Monument”. Steep limestone walls with here and there sawn surfaces and a few small corridor remains are the only remains. Not much is known about the Trichterberg quarry. That is why Peter Jennekens, Kevin Amendt and Rob Habets wrote a source overview for the magazine of the Study Group Underground Limestone Quarries - Natural History Society in Limburg. Based on this, they cautiously conclude that the origin of the quarry must lie somewhere between the years 1846 and 1867. The entire PDF with all sources can be found at https://www.sok.nl (November 2013 edition).

Text board [see photo] Limestone quarry Trichterberg Geological Monument Limestone quarry Trichterberg In the past, limestone was mined at this location. This limestone was used as building blocks and at a later time for fertilizing (oenergelen) fields and meadows ` In the upper Cretaceous (80 to 65 million years ago) the whole of South Limburg was flooded by a 'Cretaceous sea'. Many plants and animals that are now extinct lived in this tropical sea. The limestone visible here consists of countless skeletons of small plants and animals that formed the plankton. Many large animals also lived in this Cretaceous sea, such as the ten-meter-long 'Mosasaur'. Flint Flint is a hard rock that can form in pure limestone under very special circumstances. Flint consists of pure silica (SiO2). In the Stone Age, this rock was used for making stone tools. Until the last century, flint was used to make fire using the Tinderbox.

The Cannerbos is very compact and can therefore be walked in a morning or afternoon. You could say that the forest consists of floors, so you can view and walk nature from below and from higher up. Chateau Neercanne is located on the edge of the Cannerbos. This castle is the only terraced castle in the Benelux. Daniël Wolf van Dopff built this impressive castle in 1698.

Flints are dark grey to black and have a white crust. Flints are very brittle - if they are hit hard against each other they splinter. This creates smooth fracture surfaces with sharp edges. Sparks can be generated by hitting flints against each other. In ancient times flints were also used to make axes and knives.

These are very old flints, protected in the Natagora site. No fewer than 13 cave entrances follow one another along the path. They are not deep and run along the slope. Chalk was also mined there. Source: https://www.mini-ardenne.be/poi.card.php?id=6036&language=fr *Flints = flints

In the Thier des Vignes nature reserve you will find very old flint caves, protected by Natagora. There are a total of 13 cave entrances along the trail. They are not very deep and run along the slope. Chalk has also been mined here. Entering the caves felt good (and nice and fresh on a hot day). One is of course a bit nicer, deeper, higher/lower than the other.

Beautiful environment. Most of the underground quarry has disappeared due to surface mining, but a few niches in the rock wall and two small corridors have been preserved. The rock wall on the north side contains some fine examples of so-called "geological organ pipes", where the limestone is dissolved by the action of rainwater and the top layer comes down. There is even an organ pipe that has already completely emptied and thus forms an open cavity.

Neercanne Castle is a household name for anyone who has ever been to the region - and beyond. The castle, previously called Agimont Castle, is also known as the only terraced castle in the Netherlands. It is located a stone's throw from the Belgian border where you will find the village of Kanne (sub-municipality of Riemst). On the Dutch side it is close to Maastricht, with which it is strongly connected historically. Today the castle houses Restaurant Château Neercanne, while the Auberge de Neercanne is located in the former stables. In short: everything about culinary pleasure, parties and wine, albeit in a particularly historic and beautiful setting. Near the location of the current castle there were once defense works, probably of Roman origin. In addition, there are also old limestone quarries, as in the entire region, where many other peoples settled and where quite a lot can be found archaeologically. The limestone quarry is today used as a wine cellar and dining room. There was a castle here as early as 1316, when it was first mentioned. In 1465 it was set on fire by the people of Liège and plundered again in 1469. The castle was then restored. The outbuildings with the tower that characterizes the castle date from 1611 and were built in the Maasland Renaissance. The current main building took shape in 1698 after a major renovation by Daniel Wolff van Dopff, who in 1688 was put in charge of the construction of new fortifications on the west side of the city of Maastricht. He then became commander and then governor of the Maastricht fortress. More on the information board with the photos and of course on the Internet. The castle is made entirely of marlstone, with the exception of the chimney flues and door and window frames. The castle can be reached by car, but many walkers will undoubtedly prefer the stairs that go up via the terraces. Those who wish can walk even higher from the main level and enjoy beautiful views. You will find other sights on the plateau above the castle.
