City walls were medieval fortifications that were common around every large settlement in Europe at the time. Not only cities, but also market towns and larger villages tried to protect themselves from uninvited visitors in this way. The massive bulwark around Osterode was first mentioned in 1233, more than half a century before the town was even granted city rights. The wall around the historic town center of Osterode was completed around 1330. At that time, the bulwark was around 1700 meters long. It was built from locally available building materials such as pebbles and gypsum mortar. A total of four gates provided access to the protected urban area. In addition to these structures, around ten towers were added to monitor the area in front of the settlement. Despite this extensive demolition work in the past, large parts of the medieval city fortifications of Osterode have still been preserved to this day. From Hohe Straße, below the Teufelsturm, you have a beautiful view towards Leege.

The Devil's Tower, also called the "Alte Warte", is located on the Wartberg in Osterode Dreilinden. The tower was built in the 13th century as a watchtower to protect Osterode. In 1965, the remains of the tower were restored and made as it can be seen today You can get to this relic from ancient times from the direction of Dreilinden, from the direction of the Herzberger Landstrasse and from the direction of Düna. The Devil's Tower can be easily integrated into hiking tours, bicycle tours and of course running tours. A little tip for those traveling to Osterode by train: the train stop Leege! From there it's not far to the old control room🙂
