Diatomaceous earth was created by open-cast mining until the mid-20th century. Diatomaceous earth is a whitish substance derived from the shells of diatoms, which are the main component of marine plankton. They range in size from 10 to several hundred micrometers. Diatomaceous earth was used to produce shock-resistant and portable dynamite from nitroglycerin, which explodes when shaken.

The slightly hilly area of the Schwindebecker Heide was used for military purposes until the 1990s. Today, hiking trails lead through it, allowing you to discover the impressive landscape.

9월 20, 2024, Soderstorf Watermill (Wassermühle Soderstorf)
The mill was first mentioned in 1478 when it was sold by the von dem Berge family. Over its long history, it was used as a flour mill, oil mill, groat mill, tan mill, and sawmill. From the early 1960s to the late 1980s, the watermill was used solely for the mill's own needs; after that, it was no longer in use. The mill, as it can be seen today, dates back to the early 18th century. It, like the bakehouse, is located on the mill island. The bakehouse dates back to the 17th century and is still fully functional. Bread is still baked here at least once a year, for the traditional potato festival. The mill's core dates back to 1771. The half-timbered building was expanded in several construction phases, and two stories were added in some parts. It is a simple brick half-timbered structure with gable roofs covered with red clay tiles. https://muehlenhof-soderstorf.de/die-muehle/

The path east of the Luhe towards Amelinghausen is really nice - but a small "warning" - the narrow bridge over the Luhe is too narrow for a relatively normal bicycle handlebar - you have to carry your bike over it - which is not the case with luggage or heavy e-bikes is that easy.

A beautiful estate with an inn and a large garden. Unfortunately it was still closed when I visited. I'll probably be back then.

The small island with the water mill and the bakery can be reached via a narrow bridge. The water shoots impressively and powerfully through the sluice at the mill. The water wheel is very large and must have supplied a lot of energy once. Today, however, hardly anything is moved here. The water gnaws at the pillars, the wood rots and the spiders cavort in the window corners. The bridge over the lock looks more rotten than solid, but can withstand normal people. How long? It's a shame that this once beautiful building is so neglected.

A practical bridge over the river. For people with a fear of heights 🙋🏼♀️ a bit challenging, especially if the companion thinks it is funny to hop on the metal plates ... The bridge passed the test very well 😁

A detour from the main hiking trail is worthwhile not only because of the beautiful old courtyard with an impressive giant tree in front of it, but also because of the pretty fish pond with a pontoon jetty.

Rest area at the Kieselgurt ponds The diatomaceous earth deposits in the Luhe Valley were discovered in 1849. Diatomaceous earth is formed from the shells of dead diatoms. It is a sedimentary rock that occurs in lakes in layers with clay. Diatomaceous earth is used, among other things, for the production of insulating materials and filter media, but also for the transport of nitroglyserine. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kieselgur http://www.der-wanderfreund.de/2014/02/wandern-auf-dem-heide-panorama-weg-bei.html

The Soderstorf watermill was first attested in 1427. The mill has been owned by the Vogt family since 1650 and has been used in its long history as a grinding, oil, groats, trowel and sawmill. In the 1960s, the Soderstorf watermill was only used for the Mühlenhof's own needs and has been idle ever since. The current buildings on the mill island surrounded by the Luhe and the “Mühlenumflut” are from the early 19th century. The small building facing the street is the bakery and the larger half-timbered house on the edge of the grove is the mill building. https://www.lueneburger-heide.de/service/sehenswuerdigkeit/5326/amelinghausen-wassermuehle-soderstorf.html

Schwindebecker Heide An impressive new beginning for people and nature From the so-called Feldherrenhügel you can see the special heather landscape of the Schwindebecker Heide. The heather you see from here used to be part of several military training areas in the area. Today this beautiful landscape is a paradise for insects such as bees, digger wasps, butterflies, ant lions and grasshoppers. Bring a picnic with you, tables and benches are provided. Already knew? The British Army of the Rhine used these areas ... From 1960 to 1995 the British Army on the Rhine used these areas for military exercises. More than two thirds of the land around Schwindebeck has been misappropriated. Tanks in particular transformed the former pine approach areas into a true lunar landscape. Because of the huge sandy areas, they even practiced for the first Iraq war! https://naturpark-lueneburger-heide.de/natur-und-kultur/naturwunder-und-naturblicke/feldherrenhuegel-schwindebecker-heide?&ref=https%3A%2F%2Fnaturpark-lueneburger-heide.de%2Fnatur-und- culture% 2Fnaturwunder-und-Naturblicke% 2Ffeldherrenhuegel-schwindebecker-heath
