It's also one of the top sections of the DEK Route or Ems Cycle Path, whichever you prefer. 🤠 It's not an Ems riverside path, though, but rather an Ems Cycle Path or DEK Route. Steinbild has nothing great to offer...except for its tranquility.

A section of the highest quality. Great for riding or just rolling. Lots of benches along the way.

A popular meeting place for cyclists on Sundays and public holidays. Be careful, the road forks in both directions behind the bridge by the beer garden...cars (mostly with EL license plates) are welcome to drive from the left and right at excessive speed... I've started to call them kamikaze pilots... 0 consideration for the narrow country road. Currently closed as of June 17, 2025...vacant.

Old lock The first lock chamber was built in 1896 in embankment construction and put into operation with the completion of the Dortmund-Ems Canal in 1899. It is 165 m long, 10 m wide and is closed with two mortise gates. New lock Parallel to the old lock, another and wider lock chamber made of sheet piling was built in 1957. It is 165 m long and 12 m wide In the period from 2011 to 2012, the facility was completely renovated and brought up to date with the latest technology. The lock chamber received new sliding gates and it was set up for remote control and monitoring by the Meppen control center. Since not all work could be carried out during ongoing operations, the new lock had to be temporarily closed and shipping diverted via the old lock.
