The Scott family, principal land owners in the area built the inn as part of the rebuild of the village a benevolance which carried on into the 19th century when among other things they built the village school.

Honouring Oswald of Northumbria, an Anglo-Saxon saint, this church finds its roots in the Saxon era. Subsequently, it underwent reconstruction during the 15th century, followed by a comprehensive restoration and expansion between 1840 and 1841. The tower's construction took place in the 16th century, while its clock found its home in 1891. Within the churchyard rest the graves of notable figures such as Major General James Gunter (1833–1908), a valiant participant in the Crimean War, and Benjamin Eamonson (died 1867), who dutifully served as the vicar for an impressive span of 29 years.

I believe that the bridge is closed for repair until 31 October 2023 so look to take a detour. Komoot has automatically routed me across the golf course to the North which you can get through with your bike (unofficially).

Please note that at the time of writing this bridge is closed to all traffic including cyclists.

The Battle of Marsden Moor was fought on 2nd July 1644, the largest in the English Civil War and possibly the largest ever in England. It was a decisive point as the Royalists were defeated meaning they had lost control of the North of England. There are a number of interp boards at the memorial which give further information.

Helperby is a lovely village with lots of character, even though in the 17th century a fire ripped through the village taking out all the historic buildings. There is a lovely cafe and deli in Helperby Stores which is popular with cyclists. Well worth a stop for a meal or coffee and cake if you are passing by.

The town of Boroughbridge has a bustling high street with plenty of cafes and a bakery for refuelling and recharging. Boroughbridge is halfway between London and Edinburgh so was historically an important stopover for stage coaches. In 1754 the journey was 10 days in summer and 12 in the winter so an arduous journey. No doubt the hospitality of Boroughbridge (then Burrow Bridge) was very welcome indeed.

Well known and popular brewery in Tadcaster. You can take a tour or just marvel at the building from the outside.

A very popular road for local cyclists, with a great view on both sides. If you're coming from Wetherby you'll have climbed to get here so you'll have earned it!

There is a small free car park at Tadcaster just over the bridge by the bus station. If you go there early it’s a good starting place/end place for a variety of rides.

The rickety little Aldwark Bridge is the best place to cross the River Ure by bike and saves a 25 mile detour. Its 40p for cars but free for bikes!

Interesting toll bridge paved with wooden boards. The sign said it was 40p but the toll collector waved us through on our bikes 🤷‍♂️
